10 Ways to Get Involved

Want to do something now that will make a difference? Here are some ways you can help in the fight for justice.

1. Get informed about modern-day slavery and how to combat it so that you can speak with authority. www.FreeTheSlaves.net is a good place to start.

2. Use your influence. Help raise awareness about modern-day slavery among people you know.

3. Through blogs, e-mail, and school assignments, share stories of real people enslaved today. (If you are a pastor or teacher, use sermons or lessons to help inform and inspire the people you teach.)

4. Raise funds for abolitionist organizations through LC2LC (www.ijm.org/getinvolved/youth), www.NotForSaleCampaign.org, or another group.

5. Pray for the end of slavery, for the people who are enslaved, and for the slaveholders. Ask God to intervene, and to reveal how He wants you to participate.

6. Buy fair trade products whenever possible—there are many companies and organizations that help third world artisans, farmers, and micro-enterprises get fair prices for their goods without the crippling fees that middlemen often shave off profits. This helps promote justice by strengthening communities and families’ economic independence. Learn more at www.FairTradeFederation.org or www.TransfairUSA.org.

7. Inform companies you patronize that you expect them to clean up their supply chain and be slave-free. Share what you’ve learned about slavery particularly to companies who deal in coffee, chocolate, clothing, and handcrafted goods, and find out if they know about fair trade alternatives.

8. Help your church, school, or company become slave-free by using only fair trade coffee and supplies. www.PuraVidaCoffee.com is a Christian fair trade coffee seller that is also non-profit—besides helping farmers in developing countries earn a fair wage, profits help former street children and other at-risk kids.

9. Inform your local and national government officials about modern-day slavery, and ask them to commit time and resources to help end the sale of humans. Contact your representative and senator at www.USA.gov/Contact/Elected.

10. Support education for at-risk populations around the world. Knowledge is one of the greatest “immunizations” against oppression and exploitation. Learn how you can help former enslaved child soldiers in Uganda get an education through www.InvisibleChildren.com.
